Photography Now
Gradually over the last 20 years digital imaging technology replaced silver halide, which is now heading to the history books. Although cameras are still in use for making images, we now have a number of other ways to paint with light. The use of flat bed scanners to scan objects laid directly on the scanner bed is one. But more interesting is the use of computers and computer software to create photographs.

To create an artistic photograph is to create a picture with enough suggestion and intrigue. A photograph with impact has both mastery of technique and the presence of mystery. A good photograph should stir an emotion. Composition is the process of looking beyond the content of a visual statement. Objectivity destroys artistic vision. Any work of art will have its supporters and opponents, but it is important to understand that other people’s opinions are not law or judgment. They are, however, input; and it is important that the artist should balance them with his conviction.

Looking At Photographs
A successful photograph is not content with providing us with something to look at; it often provides us with something to think about too " Jean-Marie Schoeffer. Abstraction is a way of liberating the image from the technical and visual constraints. We increasingly inhabit a world of " mature " imagery. We have seen it all. A fine photograph should be about feelings, intuition, spontaneity and emotions. One of the best ways to appreciate an image is to observe, think and talk about it. A discussion of meaning is more important than a pronouncement of judgment.

A non-creative environment is one that constantly bombards us with visual stimuli. Once we detach ourselves from all these distractions establishing an island of silence we can then become creative again. Looking is to make immediate choices, instant appraisals of what we are looking at (Labeling)—I like or I dislike, I accept or I reject, is this a photograph or painting. Seeing has no room for labeling. Labeling is replaced by awareness and attention for everything. It replaces what we think we must like with what we truly like.
